Key Stage 1 & 2 (Years 1 to 6)
Early Years’ Foundation
A building’s foundations are unseen but vital. They need to be solid, deep and crafted by experts. It is no coincidence that the Early Years of the English National Curriculum are also called the Foundation Stage.
Foundation Stage teachers carefully plan and resource the environment to inspire meaningful play and ignite children’s imagination, which helps them discover and make sense of their world as they explore and experiment in safe but challenging indoor and outdoor environments.
Early Years Foundation Stage
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework is used to focus on seven key areas of learning and development:
Communication And Language
Physical Development
Personal Social And Emotional Development
Literacy
Mathematics
Understanding The World
Expressive Arts And Design
Play underpins the learning and all aspects of children’s development in EYFS. Through play, children develop language, practice new ideas and skills, take risks, show imagination, develop motor skills and learn how to solve problems independently and with others.
The EYFS is about how children learn, as well as what they learn. Children need opportunities to develop their play and independent exploration. This is enjoyable and motivating. They also need adults to ‘scaffold’ their learning by giving them just enough help to achieve something they could not do independently. Helping children to think, discuss and plan ahead is important, like gathering the materials they need to make a den before they start building. These are ways of helping children to develop the characteristics of effective learning.
When children are at earlier stages of development than expected, it is crucial to notice what they enjoy doing and find out where their difficulties may lie. They need extra help to become secure in the earlier stages of development. It is not helpful to wait for them to become ‘ready’. For example, children who are not speaking in sentences will not be able to write in sentences. They will need lots of stimulating experiences to help them develop their communication. That’s why the time you spend listening to them and having conversations with them is so important.
Children learn and develop more from birth to five years old than at any other time in their lives. If children are at risk of falling behind the majority, the best time to help them catch up and keep up is in the early years. Every child can make progress if they are given the right support. When we give every child the best start in their early years, we give them what they need today. We also set them up with every chance of success tomorrow.
Grades And Ages
Key Stage 1
Key Stage 1 comprises Year 1 (ages 5-6) and Year 2 (ages 6-7). KS1 aims to build on the foundations laid in EYFS and continue to provide a safe, secure, and stimulating learning environment that encourages your children to become confident learners. We support your child as they transition from EYFS into KS1 and, during years 1 and 2, will continue to develop their skills in preparation for Key Stage 2.
To ensure a smooth transition from EYFS, your children will continue to experience elements of play-based learning as they bridge into more formal learning environments during their progression through the Key Stage.
KS1 marks a shift from EYFS to more subject-specific learning. KS1 covers all compulsory National Curriculum subjects. These are English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Computing, PE, Art, Music, Design and Technology and languages, which in our case, Bahasa Malaysian and Mandarin.
Emphasis is placed on partnership with our teachers working closely with you to address the individual needs of your child. Close monitoring of social and academic development, small class sizes and excellent communication with our families all help to contribute to the success of children in KS1.
Foundation Stage 2
Key Stage 2 covers Years 3 to 6 with children spanning the ages of 7 to 11. This area builds upon the learning developed in Key Stage 1 and prepares them for a successful transition into Senior School.
KS2 covers all compulsory National Curriculum subjects English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Computing, Bahasa Malaysian, Mandarin, PE, Art, Music and Design and Technology.
Children experience a rich and varied curriculum with literacy and numeracy at its core. Specialist teachers take lessons in PE, swimming, Mandarin, Bahasa Malaysian, and Music.
KS2 children are encouraged to take on leadership positions and set an example for younger children. Children have the opportunity to take on roles as Head Boy and Girl, Prefects, House Captains and Class Representative on the Student Council.
Assemblies are led by our Prefects.
Children’s academic progress is closely monitored and tracked. PIRA (Progress in Reading Assessment) and PUMA (Progress in Understanding Mathematics Assessment) are taken at the end of each term. The children sit externally marked PIE (Progress in English) and PIM (Progress in Mathematics). Children in Years 3 and 5 complete the Cat4 assessments (Cognitive Ability Tests), where Verbal, Quantitative, Non-Verbal and Spatial potential are assessed. CAT4 provides an understanding of what a child is capable of, as well as identifying which pupils have the potential to achieve more and those who need support in certain subjects. A pupil with a low quantitative score may struggle with maths, for instance, while one with a low verbal score may find it challenging to access the curriculum. These insights help us to personalise their learning and unlock hidden potential. Reports provide analysis at both individual and group levels.
